Malden police warn of scam targeting high school students – NBC Boston

Police in Malden, Massachusetts, are warning students about a scam.

Malden High School students have received emails promising them jobs, work from home and $300 a week, but police say it’s a scam and are warning students not to fall for it.

The emails appear to be genuine as the messages appear to have been sent from Malden School email accounts.

According to police, the scammers asked the students for personal information if they responded to the email. Otherwise, they were sometimes threatened with violence.

“When scammers target children and threaten violence, we haven’t seen that often,” said cybersecurity expert Robert Siciliano, CEO of Protect Now LLC.com. “They’ve taken the problem to a new level that should be concerning to parents.”

It is unclear whether the school system was hacked.

The Malden school district and police did not respond to a request for further details.
