Father and daughter found dead in Utah National Park

A 52-year-old Wisconsin man and his 23-year-old daughter were found dead after getting lost while hiking in Utah’s Canyonlands National Park in triple-digit temperatures.

The National Park Service (NPS) said in a press release that authorities received a distress text message on Friday, July 12, from someone in the park’s Island in the Sky district.

“National Park Service rangers and Bureau of Land Management Moab District Helitack personnel responded and initiated a search operation,” authorities wrote. “The two individuals were deceased when they were found.”

According to the NPS, the two people – who could only be identified as being from Green Bay, Wisconsin – “were hiking on the Syncline Trail, got lost and ran out of water.”

At the time of the incident, the temperature was over 100 degrees, the NPS said.

The NPS said it and the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the case. PEOPLE has reached out for further comment but has not immediately received a response.

In a separate incident, authorities also announced on Saturday, July 13, that a 30-year-old woman had died in Stone Canyon State Park in Utah.

In a press release, Santa Clara-Ivins Public Safety said emergency responders were dispatched to the park after initial reports indicated two people were “suffering from heat-related issues.”

When emergency responders arrived, Santa Clara-Ivins Public Safety said they found the two people showing signs of heat exhaustion. They received first aid and were immediately taken to the hospital.

“While we were on scene, a passerby contacted police and reported that a third person was unconscious nearby,” the Santa Clara-Ivins Public Safety statement continued. “The person was identified as a 30-year-old female. First responders located the person and it was determined that she was deceased.”

No further information was released about the victims at Stone Canyon State Park. Authorities said the investigation is ongoing.

Both the NPS and Santa Clara-Ivins Public Safety said in their statements that it is important for visitors to have plenty of water with them, especially during outdoor activities and high temperatures.

“Dehydration can lead to serious health problems, including heat exhaustion and heat stroke,” warned Santa Clara-Ivins Public Safety. “Watch for signs of dehydration, such as dizziness or excessive fatigue. Stay safe and drink plenty of fluids.”
