Donald Trump talks about shooting and thanks secret service

Former US President Donald Trump said in an exclusive interview with New York Post on Monday morning, referring to the assassination attempt at his campaign rally on Saturday.

On his way to Milwaukee for the Republican National Convention, Trump gave an interview and recalled that the doctor who treated him said it was “a miracle.”

Trump said the New York Post that the bullet would have killed him if he hadn’t turned his head to the side to read a medical chart. That one action, he said, was the reason only a small portion of his ear was injured.

“I shouldn’t be here. I should be dead,” Trump said. “I should be dead.”

He praised the Secret Service for protecting and killing gunman Thomas Crooks, who was positioned on a roof about 120 meters from the stage, and said the personnel did a “fantastic job.”

Trump also pointed to the photo in which he raises his fist and says “fight” three times while his face is covered in blood. “A lot of people say it’s the most iconic photo they’ve ever seen,” Trump said. “They’re right, and I didn’t die. Usually you have to die to have an iconic image.”

“By luck or by God. Many people say I’m still here because of God,” he said.

One dead, two injured

One man, eventually identified as firefighter Corey Comperatore, was killed at the rally. Two others were injured.

He reportedly told the new York post He wanted to visit the injured in the hospitals and call their families.

Asked if the incident had changed his policies or perspective, Trump said he was writing a new speech. “I want to try to unite our country,” he said, “but I don’t know if that’s possible. People are very divided.”
