Governor Greg Abbott held a news conference Sunday to discuss recovery efforts following Hurricane Beryl.

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Gov. Greg Abbott is scheduled to hold his first news conference since Hurricane Beryl made landfall at Gallery Furniture in northwest Houston on Sunday afternoon.

Sunday’s briefing will take place at Gallery Furniture in northwest Houston on Sunday afternoon.

The Texas governor was traveling abroad on a trade mission to Asia.

Details of what will be discussed at the press conference are not yet clear. However, one point of contention between the community and elected officials is who is responsible for CenterPoint’s preparation and response to the Category 1 hurricane.

The power company said it was the largest outage in history, with 2.26 million customers affected.

CenterPoint CEO Jason Wells spoke for the first time since Hurricane Beryl in an exclusive interview with our partners at the Houston Chronicle.

He defended the company’s response to the massive power outage, noting that it restored power to 1.1 million customers in 48 hours, faster than other companies have done in the last 10 named storms. Wells took responsibility for better communicating customer expectations.

His comments come after acting Gov. Dan Patrick called for an investigation into CenterPoint and its storm preparedness. Houston Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee echoed that sentiment, asking the U.S. attorney general Friday to open an investigation into the utility.

Congressman Al Green said CenterPoint refused to answer questions from members of Congress during a call Saturday.

On the ground, CenterPoint said its utility workers have faced hostile and violent interactions from the public. Wells said in a video posted online Saturday that they had to evacuate 100 linemen after someone opened fire on an employee in southwest Houston.

“This is unacceptable. The safety of our crews is paramount. Threats or acts of violence are actually counterproductive. We need to redirect our crews to a safe area. This is only delaying what is already a significant restoration effort. So I ask that you please give our crews the space they need to do their jobs safely,” Wells said.

Six days after Hurricane Beryl struck, about 460,000 people in the Houston area are still without power. CenterPoint Energy said it expects to restore power to about 85% of its customers by the end of the weekend.

The company updated its restoration map on Friday to show estimated completion dates. So far, it looks like those nearing the end of restoration may have to wait until July 19 to get back online.

At least three people died from heat in the Houston area. Others died from carbon monoxide poisoning or from oxygen equipment failure.

Governor Abbott is expected to address the city around noon in Houston to discuss ongoing recovery efforts.
