Hijab-wearing woman attacked in Harlem subway – alleged discrimination incident

A 33-year-old woman wearing a hijab was attacked on the southbound 2 train at the 125th St. station on Tuesday morning in what sources said may have been an incident of discrimination.

“I don’t like people like you,” the attacker is said to have told the victim, who is black, according to police.

The attack occurred at 9:43 a.m. when the suspect, described by sources as a man in his 30s, struck the woman in the back of the head, authorities said. It was not immediately clear what weapon was used to strike the victim.

She remained on the train and reported the incident at the 96th St. station, but refused medical attention.

According to NYPD statistics, three cases of hate crimes against Muslims were reported last month. Last year, there were 26 such incidents, resulting in 25 arrests.

Tuesday’s attack came immediately after a violent night on the subway.

Three people were injured in consecutive knife attacks at two subway stations in Times Square, police said on Wednesday.

At around 11:30 p.m., a 31-year-old man got into an argument with four men on the A/C/E platform at the Times Square-42nd St. subway station. As the argument escalated, one of the men pulled out a knife and stabbed the victim in the upper body, police said.

At 3:40 a.m., a couple waiting for the No. 7 train was attacked by a crazed man at the 42nd St.-Bryant Park station, police said.
