Dartmouth suspends fraternity amid investigation into hazing deaths

Dartmouth College has suspended two Greek organizations amid an investigation into the death of a student over the weekend, school officials said Tuesday.

The body of 20-year-old Won Jang was pulled from the Connecticut River around 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Hanover police said in a news release.

Preliminary investigations have shown that there is no suspicion of foul play, authorities said Sunday evening. However, an anonymous email sent to police on Monday suggested that the student’s death may have been the result of “some form of hazing,” police chief Charles Dennis told local television station WMUR.

Jang, of Middletown, Delaware, attended a social event hosted by Beta Alpha Omega fraternity and Alpha Phi sorority on Saturday night, according to The Dartmouth, the school’s student newspaper.

According to the publication, Jang was a member of Beta.

On Tuesday, the school said it had suspended both Greek organizations, but did not provide details.

The fraternity is under alcohol probation after a suspension in the fall, Jana Barnello, a spokeswoman for the college, told The Dartmouth.

APhi was also given a suspended sentence for alcohol in the fall, but the company’s reputation has since returned to “good”, Barnello said.

Hanover police are leading the investigation, school officials said in a statement, adding that Dartmouth is working “closely” with authorities.
