Atlanta United will have nearly $50 million to spend during the transfer window

$21 million basis for the sale of Thiago Almada to a consortium;

$11 million for the sale of Ezequiel Barco to River Plate, plus the resale percentage of his announced $16 million sale to Spartak Moscow;

Barca’s sale to River Plate was due to take effect on January 1. It is unclear whether the club spent any of those funds on new players during the winter window.

The sale of full-back Caleb Wiley to Chelsea is a possibility, with journalist David Ornstein reporting on Monday that the transfer fee would be $11 million.

The MLS transfer window opens on July 18.

Atlanta United has already signed one player, fullback Pedro Amador. He has two designated player spots remaining. MLS rules state that teams can use 95% of the funds received from the sale of designated players to acquire another designated player. Teams can also choose to spend more, if necessary.

Atlanta United sits 10th in the Eastern Conference, one spot below the playoff line. The team has not won a trophy since 2019.

Almada’s sale could fetch $31 million if incentives are found, but he won’t start playing for Botafogo in Brazil until after the Olympics. The Olympic gold medal game is scheduled for Aug. 9. The MLS transfer window closes Aug. 14. If those incentives are triggered while Almada is at Botafogo this fall, it would give Atlanta United a head start on spending money during the 2025 winter transfer window.
