The District Court in De Aar convicted a 44-year-old man of sexually abusing a six-year-old girl. The name of the accused was not disclosed.

According to Northern Cape Police spokesperson Colonel Cherelle Ehlers, the incident occurred on 11 November 2023 when the victim was visiting her grandmother’s house in Carnarvon. The accused, who was doing bathroom repairs, allegedly kissed the child and touched her in a sexual manner during the visit.

The child informed his mother about the incident and the matter was reported to the police. Subsequently, the accused was arrested but later released on bail pending trial. The court found him guilty of sexual assault on July 5.

The court sentenced the offender to six years in prison with five years’ probation on the condition that he does not have any further convictions for the same crime during the probation period. In addition, his name will be entered into the National Sex Offender Registry.
