1 dead and 2 injured in accident near Haines City

POLK COUNTY, Florida. – A woman was killed and two others were seriously injured in a three-vehicle crash near Haines City on Wednesday, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said.

The accident occurred around 3:47 p.m. on US 27 at Morrison Ranch Road, the sheriff’s office said on social media.

The driver of a 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt – identified as Katrina Moore, 64, of Haines City – lost control of the vehicle while traveling south on U.S. 27, crossed the median, entered the northbound lane and struck a 2023 Dodge Durango head-on, ejecting Moore from the Chevrolet, the post said. After the impact, both vehicles collided with a 1997 Kenworth truck, officials said.

Moore was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the sheriff’s office. The two occupants of the Dodge – a 63-year-old man from Winter Haven driving and a 59-year-old woman from Orlando as a passenger – were taken to the hospital for treatment of serious injuries, officials said.

The 54-year-old Orlando man who was driving the Kenworth truck was not injured, officials said, adding that everyone involved in the crash except Moore was wearing seat belts.

According to the sheriff’s office, two southbound lanes of US 27 were closed for about four hours, while the northbound lanes were closed for about four and a half hours.

The investigation is said to still be ongoing.
