Fitness trainer involved in 11 sexual assault cases arrested | Chandigarh News

A 28-year-old fitness trainer, allegedly involved in 11 sexual harassment cases in Chandigarh, has been arrested. The accused was tracked down after checking nearly 1,000 white Activa scooters in the tricity, one of which he used in the crimes when he sexually harassed women, police said.

The accused was remanded in custody. However, he was arrested later on Wednesday on a warrant based on a separate FIR.
The accused, Sawan Bhatti, has a bachelor’s degree in computer science and works in a gym in Mohali. He lives with a partner in Chandigarh.

Sarita Roy, SHO of Sector 17 police station in Chandigarh, said the accused was involved in a number of sexual assault cases.
In May, a complaint was received from a young woman in Sector 16. She said that she was sitting alone in a park in Sector 16-A at around 10.30 pm on May 19 when the power went out. She therefore decided to leave the park while talking on the phone with a friend.

There, a man suddenly grabbed her from behind, covered her mouth to prevent her from screaming, and dragged her to the side of the road.

The defendant then ordered her to hand over her gold chain. When she revealed that she had nothing valuable with her, he threatened to kill her and sexually abused her, according to the plaintiff.

Festive offer

The victim’s friend heard her screaming during the call and raised the alarm. The victim then approached the police along with his parents, who filed a complaint at Sector 17 police station. During the investigation, the police came to know about a similar case that was reported at Sector 11 police station on June 10.

“Based on two complaints, we started investigating the matter by checking CCTV footage of various areas. During this process, we found that the accused was driving a white Activa. Noticing features like missing rear-view mirrors and a particular type of helmet, we started searching for the vehicle. Within six weeks, nearly 1,000 similar white scooters were checked across the Tricity to trace the accused,” Roy added.

On July 1, police officials noticed a Honda Activa whose features matched those of a CCTV camera at the Sector 23 light spot. A coordinated operation led by the District Crime Branch led to Bhatti’s arrest at the Sector 16-23 dividing road. The complainant from Sector 16 identified the accused, which led to his arrest. Subsequently, both the victims were medically examined.

During questioning, the accused stated that he had previously been involved in several cases of sexual assault in the city. He usually committed the crimes after 10 p.m. near parks, where only women usually went. In order not to be identified, he covered his face with a black cloth.
