Driver dies when pickup truck leaves South Carolina road, hits tree and rolls over, cops say

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, one person was killed Saturday when a pickup truck crashed and left a road in the Midlands.

The single-vehicle crash occurred around 4:10 p.m. in Fairfield County, said Lance Cpl. Brittany Glover.

A 1994 Ford pickup truck was traveling east on SC 200 and went off the right side of the road near the intersection with Caughman Lane, according to Glover. The pickup truck then re-entered the road and continued to the left, where it struck a tree and overturned, Glover said.

According to Glover, the driver died at the scene of the accident.

The identity of the driver has not been publicly released by the Fairfield County Coroner’s Office.

Glover said the driver was the only person in the truck and no other injuries were reported.

There was no information about whether the driver was wearing a seatbelt.

Information on what caused the pickup truck to initially leave the road was not available, and Glover did not say whether the crash remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol.

According to the state Department of Public Safety, at least 447 people have died on South Carolina roads through June 23 in 2024. Last year, 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina, according to DPS.

According to DPS data, at least nine people died in crashes in Fairfield County in 2024. In 2023, 15 deaths were reported in the county, DPS said.
