Cooling Centers: City of Houston announces several centers and libraries will open so residents can get relief from the heat

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — The city of Houston plans to open several cooling centers in the area over the weekend to provide relief to residents from incoming heat and rising temperatures.

A heat advisory is in effect for most of Southeast Texas until 7 p.m. Saturday due to heat index values ​​above 108.

The heat would be a continuation of an intense early spring and early summer.

In southern counties, ABC13 has learned that intense flooding has severely damaged a road on Matagorda. W. Revetment Road. The road is the only access to a public boat launch. Local law enforcement said Tropical Storm Alberto washed it away.

Authorities are on high alert for the Trinity River as flooding has hit the dam, prompting a potential dam failure warning. However, there is no immediate threat at this time.

Back in Houston, officials are urging those attending the Pride Parade in downtown Houston to plan accordingly.

The city announced that Houston libraries, with the exception of the Downtown Central Library, will serve as refreshment centers during normal business hours on Saturday and Sunday. Some community centers are expected to open across the city from 10 a.m.
