Seattle police search for suspects in West Seattle shooting that left one person dead and another injured

Seattle police are searching for several suspects in connection with a shooting in West Seattle that left one person dead and another injured.

Investigators said they received reports of multiple shots fired on Harbor Avenue Southwest near Alki Avenue Southwest around 3:51 a.m. Saturday.

According to the Seattle Fire Department, a man was pronounced dead at the scene after police found him on the street with multiple gunshot wounds.

A nearby house was hit by gunfire, police said, but no one was injured.

KIRO 7 News reported that two windows at a nearby apartment complex were hit by gunfire.

Steve Pumphrey, whose house was hit by a bullet, said he heard about 10 shots.

“I was woken up by gunshots. I heard the gunshots,” he said. “It doesn’t make you feel very safe, that’s for sure, but it also makes you angry. It makes you sad that the city has come to this.”

“I have lived here for 26 years. It is not as safe as it used to be,” he added.

Police are searching for several suspects who left the crime scene, they said.

Officers said they later found a second victim with a gunshot wound in Renton. They were taken to a hospital in stable condition.

Neighbors who live near the crime scene said many people woke up Saturday worried about their safety.

“I feel like I don’t feel safe in my community anymore,” said Gladys Penate, a neighbor. “I’ve decided to stay home for safety reasons. I think we need to bring stability back to our communities. That’s something we need as people.”

“It has affected our way of life. We no longer go for walks in the evenings, which we used to do all the time,” said another neighbor.

Penate said she emailed the Seattle mayor and city councilors about the fatal shooting and asked for their help. She read us part of her email:

“It saddens me that this community is becoming a playground for criminals. I ask that you please provide stability by doing whatever is necessary to make my community a safe place,” her email said.

“I need them to represent me and I need them to hear my voice,” Penate added. “We need to protect our families and our friendships in this community so that our community can continue to thrive as it is meant to.”

KIRO 7 News has reached out to the Seattle and Renton police departments for more details on the suspects and victims. We are still waiting for a response.

Detectives are investigating this case as a murder.
