Lawmakers call for investigation into campus chief’s killing

KATHMANDU, June 16: Lawmakers have demanded a thorough investigation into the incident in which Hari Bhusan Kushwaha, campus chief of Ramraja Mohan Bikram Sah Multiple Campus at Kalaiya in Bara district, was shot dead.

During the ’emergency hour’ in the House session today, CPN (UML) MP Achyut Prasad Mainali strongly condemned the incident and said that such killings were taking place one after another. He described Kushwaha as a scholar and an honest person.

Mainali referred to two murder cases that took place in Bara district – the murder of Bal Ekata Boarding School principal Rupesh Sarraf at Kalaiya Chowk in Bara district last September and the murder of an Indian national in Pacharauta township in August last year. He urged the government to take into consideration the safety of citizens.

“The number of killings has increased. People in border areas are insecure and terrorised due to arms smuggling across the open border with India. A decade ago, a series of killings took place in Madhesh province under political guise. Many citizens were displaced due to terror,” he said, adding that a series of killings had again started in Madhesh at a time when people there had forgotten the past killings and were feeling relief.

MP Mainali demanded that the killings be brought under control immediately and the perpetrators brought to justice.

Another MP, Ashok Kumar Chaudhary of the Rastriya Swatantra Party, also called on the government to conduct an inquiry into the killing of campus chief Kushwaha.

“It is unfortunate that the ‘gurus’ of the teaching profession were shot dead in broad daylight. In the last week alone, four people were shot dead in Madhesh province. I request the government to investigate such heinous crimes and bring the culprits to justice,” he said.
