“It’s very intimidating that there is someone who crosses the last physical boundary that you have and are allowed to have as a human being. It’s a shock and a surprise,” she added.

The Prime Minister’s office said on Saturday that the attack had “caused mild whiplash” and that the Danish leader was “shaken by the incident.” Eyewitnesses reported seeing a man “give her a hard push on the shoulder.”

In a post on Instagram, Frederiksen asked for “rest” for her “body and soul” so she could recover.

Police arrested a 39-year-old Polish citizen who was believed to be drunk and had no political motives. He will remain in custody until at least June 20.

The attack sparked sympathy among European leaders. Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called it a “despicable act that goes against everything we believe in and fight for in Europe,” and French President Emmanuel Macron wished Frederiksen a “speedy recovery.”

Frederiksen, who has led Denmark since 2019, said the incident was not a reason for her resignation.
