The investigation is being conducted by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – A suspect who Columbus police say was attacking people with a knife was shot and killed by police Monday night.

According to Sergeant Joe Albert, officers were called because a man with a knife was attacking vehicles. Albert said several callers reported the man was attacking people walking by in the middle of the road.

When officers arrived, they found the suspect outside of a vehicle holding what appeared to be an edged weapon, according to Albert. Officers noticed the suspect was Hispanic and ordered him to show them his hands in English and Spanish, Albert said. The suspect got into a car and drove away.

Officers followed the suspect, who was driving on Georgesville Road. Shortly after turning onto Sullivant Avenue, Albert said the suspect stopped his vehicle and got out with the gun in his hand. Officers ordered the suspect to show them his hands in English and Spanish. He reportedly ignored the commands, got back in his vehicle and drove away.

The suspect drove to the intersection of Sullivant Avenue and Industrial Mile Road, where he reportedly got out of the car with the gun in his hand and ran toward oncoming traffic.

Albert said officers followed the suspect and one of them fired his stun gun at him, but to no avail. The suspect then turned around and charged at officers with the gun in his hand. Several officers fired their weapons, striking the suspect, Albert said.

The suspect was taken to Doctors Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 11:49 p.m. None of the officers were injured.

The investigation is being conducted by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
