Suspect raped woman on Cleveland’s East Side, then shot man who tried to help, authorities say

CLEVELAND, Ohio — A Cleveland man who has an outstanding arrest warrant is now accused of kidnapping a woman at gunpoint, raping her and shooting a person in the stomach as he tried to render aid.

QuaSan Rose, 25, was charged with aggravated assault in Cleveland Municipal Court on Monday. At a court hearing on Tuesday, a judge set his bail at $200,000.

The attack occurred Sunday near Mount Auburn Avenue in the Kinsman neighborhood, authorities said. The victim turned 21 that day.

While she was trying to call 911, one of her friends drove to the scene to help her, a Cleveland prosecutor said during Tuesday’s bail hearing. Rose fired shots at the vehicle, hitting a 24-year-old man in the stomach, the prosecutor said. In total, Rose fired eight shots, the prosecutor added.

Police learned of the incident through a ShotSpotter report. When they arrived, they saw Rose dragging the woman into some bushes in a field across the street, according to court documents. Officers gave chase and eventually caught and arrested Rose.

The victim’s condition is unknown, but he was able to tell police that when he got out of the car, he heard gunshots and then realized he had been shot in the stomach. He never saw who shot him, he reported.

Rose’s case is pending in Cuyahoga Common Pleas Court after a 49-count indictment was filed last month. The indictment includes several charges, including assault, kidnapping and abduction. East Cleveland police are listed as the arresting agency. A warrant was issued for Rose’s arrest last Wednesday.

On Tuesday, the same morning he appeared in District Court on the new charges, Rose appeared before a Common Pleas judge. That judge set his bail in the case at $150,000.

An attorney with the Cuyahoga County public defender’s office said Tuesday that Rose had been doing odd jobs and was looking for more work.
