Rape Accused: Man Arrested 40 Years Later for Kidnapping and Raping Underage Girl | Mumbai News

MUMBAI: Forty years after his disappearance, DB Marg police tracked down a now 70-year-old rapist from Agra, arrested him and brought him to the city on Tuesday.

In 1984, the defendant is said to have kidnapped a 17-year-old girl whose mother had filed a complaint of kidnapping and rape. Shortly after being granted bail, the accused failed to appear in court and later disappeared. A court issued a permanent arrest warrant against the defendant in 2015. “The accused used to run a gold smelting plant in south Mumbai. He was 30 years old when the crime took place. The accused was arrested after the girl’s mother lodged an FIR. The court later granted him bail. However, he stopped appearing in court and disappeared,” a police source said.

Police said the accused and the girl might have married only after he was released on bail. “Around 15 years after the incident, the accused sold his properties in Mumbai and moved to Agra with his wife and children. There was no clue as to his whereabouts. We didn’t even have his photo,” the police source added.

According to sources, the accused lived with his family. “He told us that his wife passed away in 2011. One of his four sons died of tuberculosis and another son died in Mumbai. He never informed the police or the court about his wife’s death. A chargesheet has also been filed in the kidnap and rape case,” the source said. The complainant in the case, the girl’s mother, has also died, the source added.
