Memphis man attacked by hospital patient | News

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis man is fighting for his life at Regional One Hospital after being attacked by a fellow patient at another hospital, a family member said.

His mother wants to know how Delta Specialty Hospital could do this to her son. Delta Medical treats patients with mental health and addiction problems. “He was unrecognizable. What happened? Where do you do something like that? You get beaten up like that in a hospital?” says Najmah Woods, the victim’s mother.

Woods said her son, Mansour El-Amin, was severely beaten by another patient at Delta Specialty Hospital. El-Amin told his mother he had been in a drug rehabilitation program before being transferred to Delta Medical after complaining of pain.

“He called me from the psychiatric unit at Delta Medical Health. He said, ‘Mom, I’m so proud of myself. I look so much better. My skin color is coming back and I have a little belly.’ I said, ‘Good. Stay like that,'” El-Iman said.

Hours later, she received another call from faculty members.

“She said, ‘I’m calling to tell you that your son is here with the paramedics and they are preparing him for transport to the Mediterranean,'” Woods said.

According to the police report, a patient suffering from schizoaffective disorder repeatedly punched El-Amin in the face. The report says El-Amin fell to the ground, continued to punch him, and even kicked him in the head as a staff member pulled him away. She said her son has severe brain bleeding, multiple fractures on his face, and needs a tube to help him breathe. She said his condition is critical but stable.

“The stability comes from the sedation. He doesn’t really do anything on his own. He doesn’t even breathe on his own,” Woods said.

We have asked Delta Medical for a comment.

Here is the response we received: “The safety and well-being of our patients and staff is our top priority. Out of respect for patient privacy, we cannot disclose any details. We are fully cooperating with law enforcement on this matter. For further information, please contact the Memphis Police Department.”
