From Iceland – 27 injured in bus accident in South Iceland

Shortly before 5 p.m. on Saturday, a bus overturned on Rangárvallavegur near Stokkalækur in southern Iceland. mbl.is reported. There were 27 people on the bus, including the driver. All are Icelandic citizens.

Two coast guard helicopters and several ambulances were sent to the scene, from both the Capital Region Fire Department and the Árnessýsla Fire Department. Every single person on board was taken to hospital for treatment, either to Landspítali or to hospitals in Hella and Selfoss. The injuries vary, some are “serious” according to police.

“At the moment we are examining and assessing the injuries. We do not yet know the condition of the injured,” says Jón Gunnar Þórhallsson, police chief in South Iceland. “The injuries range from light to severe.”

The bus belongs to the bus company GTS, Guðmundur Tyrfingsson. How the accident happened is still unclear, the police in South Iceland are currently investigating.
