What we know about the investigation

As police continue to investigate the horrific crash on Route 80 in Hackensack that left two people dead and several others injured late Tuesday night, numerous questions remain unanswered.

Here’s everything we know so far and the questions we still want answered about the crash.

What caused the crash?

According to a preliminary investigation released Wednesday morning, a Toyota SUV traveling eastbound in the local lanes struck the median at mile marker 66.6 and entered the express lane, where it collided with a Volvo tractor-trailer.

The Volvo then crossed into the westbound lanes, where it collided with an Isuzu van, which then crossed into the westbound lanes and burst into flames. A second vehicle, a GMC SUV, also collided with the Volvo, according to state police.

As of Friday morning, state police were unable to answer questions about the cause of the accident and why the Toyota hit the median. The accident is the subject of ongoing investigations.

Who are the victims?

On Wednesday, state police confirmed that both the driver and passenger of the van were killed in the accident.

As of Friday morning, state police were unable to release the identities of the perpetrators because the accident was still under investigation.

Who are the injured and what condition are they in?

The driver of the Volvo is a 63-year-old man from Temple, Texas, and his passenger is a 60-year-old man from Killeen, Texas. They were both seriously injured and taken to a local hospital.
