The death of ice hockey player Adam Johnson is being investigated by police in England

Authorities in England are reportedly investigating the death of former Pittsburgh Penguins player Adam Johnson, who was killed during an EIHL game last weekend.

On Monday, the police announced that the investigation into the accident that led to the death of the 29-year-old was still ongoing.

Johnson died after his throat was cut by a faulty skate blade following a collision with opposing player Matt Petgrave in Saturday’s game against the Sheffield Steelers. Johnson received emergency treatment on the ice before being taken to Northern General Hospital in Sheffield, where he was pronounced dead.

According to a statement from South Yorkshire Police on Monday, police officers “remain at the scene and are conducting inquiries” while their “investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident remain ongoing.”

The U.K.-based Elite Ice Hockey League, where the fatal injury occurred, postponed all of its games on Sunday and has not announced plans to resume the season at this time.

Johnson is the second player in the past two years to die from a cut from a skate blade, after Teddy Balkind, a 16-year-old high school hockey player in Connecticut, died in January 2022 after his throat was slit during a game was.

The Grand Rapids, Minnesota native scored one goal and recorded four assists in 13 regular-season NHL contests over two seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins from 2018 to 2020.
