1 was shot in the Fayetteville neighborhood, police are appealing for information in the murder

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) – Officials in Fayetteville are looking for clues after a man was shot in a neighborhood early Sunday.

The murder was reported just after 5:20 a.m. Sunday as shots fired in the 2000 block of Seneca Drive at Courtney Street, according to a news release from Fayetteville Police.

The area is a small neighborhood just off Rosehill Road north of the intersection with Ramsey Street/US 401 Business.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found a man with at least two gunshot wounds, police said.

The man died at the scene of the accident before he could be taken to hospital.

Police identified the victim as Willie Russell, 31, of Fayetteville. His relatives were contacted before police released his name.

“This is an active investigation,” officials said in the news release Sunday evening.

Officials said anyone with information about the fatal shooting should contact Detective R. Vernon at (910) 729-2525.
