Husband of missing wife arrested three months after she disappeared

The husband of a woman who disappeared in Spain has been arrested by US federal agents three months after her disappearance. He was charged with kidnapping, according to the criminal complaint seen by PEOPLE.

According to the Spanish National Center for Missing Persons website, 40-year-old Ana Maria Knezevich went missing in Madrid on Friday, February 2nd.

She traveled from South Florida to Spain in December following her “bad divorce” from her husband of 13 years, David Knezevich, 36, according to the Associated Press.

According to the outlet, the couple, who sometimes spells their last name “Knezevic,” owns EOX Technology Solutions Inc., which provides computer support in South Florida.

Policía Nacional, the Spanish international police, reported on this Xformerly Twitter that David Knezevich was arrested at Miami International Airport “for his alleged connection to his wife’s disappearance.”

According to the AP, Knezevich appeared in federal court in Miami following the arrest on Monday, May 6, and will have a bail hearing on Friday, May 10.

“Spanish National Police, Customs and Border Protection, Diplomatic Security Service and the FBI continue their investigations. Because this is an ongoing investigation, no further information will be released,” the FBI said in a statement to the AP.

His attorney, Ken Padowitz, did not respond to the AP’s request for comment following Knezevich’s arrest, and Padowitz did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment. In February, Padowitz told the AP that Knezevich was not involved in his wife’s disappearance and was cooperating with authorities.

The complaint, reviewed by PEOPLE, states that Ana was last seen on surveillance cameras entering her apartment building “on or about February 2” in Madrid around 2:30 p.m

“On the same day at approximately 9:27 p.m., the building’s surveillance camera captured a man wearing a helmet entering the building while several people exited the building at the same time. “As soon as he entered the building, the man was filmed descending with a can of spray paint in his hand, which he used to disable a security camera by painting the lens,” it continues.

The man is then allegedly seen “attaching a piece of tape to the lock of the building entrance to prevent the lock from engaging and allowing subsequent entry.” The complaint says the man “had physical characteristics similar to those of Knezevich.”

Police conducted a welfare check of the apartment and reportedly discovered that several of Ana’s items were missing. After the investigation began, investigators also obtained surveillance footage that showed David purchasing the spray paint and tape.

Officers also determined that David traveled abroad “on or about January 27” and later asked an associate to “impersonate the victim in order to open a new bank account.”

In a statement on South Florida Sun SentimentalSanna Rameau, Ana’s friend, reacted to David’s arrest, saying they were “very happy that an arrest occurred and I hope that this new chapter brings clarity and that we get the answers we hope for.”

“We want to know what happened to her and where she is. “Of course we want the person responsible for this to be held accountable,” the statement continued.
