Fatal tractor-trailer accident leads to hazmat crash, eastbound lanes reopen on US-58 in Chesapeake

According to police, a sedan collided with a semi-truck attempting to make a U-turn in the eastbound lane early Friday morning, killing the driver of the sedan.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – One person is dead after a tractor-trailer accident on US-58 Friday morning, police said.

Chesapeake police said they responded to US-58 near the 5100 block of W. Military Highway and Hampton Roads Executive Airport around 4:10 a.m. for a report of a vehicle accident

According to police, the driver of a semi-truck reportedly attempted to make a U-turn while traveling westbound into the eastbound lanes. A white sedan traveling eastbound then crashed into the tractor-trailer.

When officers arrived, they found the driver of the sedan dead.

The tractor-trailer’s fuel tank ruptured in the accident and spilled onto the eastbound roadway. HAZMAT teams are helping with the cleanup work. The Chesapeake Fire Department told 13News Now that there are no hazard concerns, but that it is standard procedure to notify the Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) of a hazardous material release.

The cleanup is expected to take several hours.

According to police, the eastbound lanes have been reopened.

The Chesapeake Police Crash Reconstruction Team is investigating the accident. According to police, the driver of the tractor-trailer remained on scene.
