Harris Rallies in Georgia as Arizona Holds Primaries; 2025 Project Ends Political Work

Michigan Democratic Sen. Gary Peters said he preferred to “respect the process” behind Harris’s choice of a running mate when asked if he would accept an offer to join her on the ticket during an interview on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

“She has a lot of great people by her side and she’s going to make a decision that’s right for her and right for the country,” he said. “It’s a very personal decision and I want to respect that process.”

Pressed again on whether he would accept an offer to be Harris’ running mate if asked, Peters reiterated that he would “respect the process.”

“Whatever his choice, I will fully support him,” he said.

Peters, who chairs the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, said “the outlook has become much brighter” for candidates in tight Senate races in key states since Harris launched her presidential campaign.

He noted that this cycle has a similar dynamic to the midterm elections, with “strong incumbents running against these flawed opponents,” in addition to “the energy we see on the ground.”

Peters also argued that the issue of labor rights is “absolutely critical” to a Democratic victory in the presidential race, particularly in key states like Michigan.

“We’ve seen the middle class shrink, which is almost directly related to the decline in unions. And yet right now, unions enjoy the highest level of public approval in decades,” he said.

“To me, that’s part of the heart and essence of who we are as Democrats: We stand for working people, we stand for unions, and we understand that you can’t have a strong, vibrant middle class without a strong, vibrant union presence,” he added. “And that’s something that I’m passionate about and I think Vice President Harris will be and is. She’s made many appearances with unions and that’s going to be critical to us winning, not just in Michigan, but in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.”
