Karachi Water Corporation whistleblower suspended after exposing massive mafia operations

Action taken against Deputy Director Mirza Ikhlaq for uncovering over 100 illegal water connections in the SITE area

The water company’s deputy finance director, Mirza Ikhlaq Baig, who uncovered one of the biggest water thefts in Karachi’s history, has been suspended from his post. According to Express NewsHe was fired after uncovering a scheme to steal billions of rupees worth of water.

Baig discovered over 100 illegal connections siphoning water from the main supply lines in Karachi’s SITE area. Despite threats and bribes from the water mafia, he reported the discovery to higher authorities and demanded that the illegal taps be switched off. His efforts resulted in over 40 threatening calls and serious consequences.

Baig’s exposure of illegal activities met with internal resistance. Instead of receiving support, he was threatened with suspension, allegedly due to pressure from the Anti-Theft Department and the Technical Department.

According to sources, the anti-theft department and the technical department of the water utility have been severely compromised, leading to prolonged water shortages in the central districts of Karachi.

Despite attempts to address these problems, including raids in Nazimabad, systemic corruption appears to continue unabated. Repeated attempts to contact the Water Corporation’s CEO for comment were unsuccessful.
