Drunk cop harasses woman for driving without helmet in Rajasthan’s Jodhpur, suspended

Jodhpur: An assistant sub-inspector of Rajasthan police has been suspended for allegedly harassing and threatening a woman in a drunken state after he caught her riding without a helmet, police said on Friday.

The suspension came after a video surfaced on social media showing the officer harassing the woman, who runs a beauty parlour near Bhaskar Circle here.

The victim told PTI that despite her complaint, no action was taken immediately after the incident which occurred on Monday evening when Nikita Jain was returning home on a two-wheeler after work.

Jain said in her complaint that ASI Amit Meena stopped her near Bhaskar Circle for riding without a helmet. The officer allegedly demanded Rs 5,000 as fine. When she refused and tried to walk away, he held her hand and started threatening her.

Meanwhile, some people had gathered there and Jain fled the scene. But a moment later, she was followed by Meena on his motorcycle, the complaint states.

The ASI hit the woman’s bicycle several times, causing her to lose her balance and fall, it said.

Jain said she immediately informed her family members, who rushed to the scene and informed the police. However, a police team arrived at the scene and took the officer away without taking any action.

The victim told PTI that she filed a written complaint against Meena at the local police station but no FIR was filed. She visited the police station repeatedly for two days but no action was taken in the matter.

Only when senior officials came to know about the matter did the police take action against the ASI, the complainant said.

DCP (Headquarters) Sharad Choudhary on Wednesday issued an order posting ASI Meena on police cordon duty with immediate effect, police said.

The officer was suspended later on Thursday and an internal agency investigation was launched against him, they added.

SHO (Ratanada) Pradeep Danga said that a case was registered against ASI Meena on Wednesday on various points of view and a sub-inspector was assigned to investigate the matter.

Danga said Meena was reportedly still heavily drunk when he was summoned to the Ratanada police station on Wednesday.

Medical tests conducted on the accused confirmed that he was under the influence of alcohol, the SHO said.
