Live updates: Investigations into shooting at Trump rally continue after assassination attempt

Fareed Zakaria met with Iran’s acting Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani at Hudson Yards in New York and asked him about CNN’s coverage of an alleged Iranian assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.

The reporting came after U.S. authorities received information about the alleged plot from a human source in recent weeks. That development led the Secret Service to increase security around the former president in recent weeks, several people familiar with the matter told CNN.

The Permanent Mission of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations denied the allegations.

During his interview, Zakaria asked Kani whether the plot was retaliation for the assassination of senior Iranian general Qasem Soleimani, who died in January 2020, which took place during the Trump administration.

“I have explicitly told you that we will use legal and judicial processes and frameworks at the national and international levels to bring the perpetrators and military advisers of the assassination of General Soleimani to justice,” Kani said.

When asked if this meant renunciation of violence, Kani replied: “We will only resort to Iranian and international legal and judicial procedures.”

“So far we have done that, and it is our right, and of course we will continue to do that. And the Americans have openly said that they assassinated the highest-ranking Iranian military commander. So it is our natural right to pursue this case, and the defendants in this case should be brought to justice,” Kani said.

Zakaria’s full interview with Kani will air on “Fareed Zakaria GPS” Sunday at 10 a.m. ET.
