Heat Warning and Air Quality Alert for Lower Hudson Valley, NY

A heat warning is in effect for the lower Hudson Valley from Monday through Tuesday; it is the second heat wave to hit the region this month.

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for the lower Hudson Valley from noon Monday, July 15, to 10 p.m. noon Tuesday, July 16. In addition, an air quality advisory has been issued from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday.

What does a heat warning mean?

The National Weather Service said a heat warning is issued when the heat index, the combination of heat and humidity, predicts a perceived temperature of “95 to 99 degrees for two or more consecutive days or 100 to 104 degrees for any duration.”

How hot and humid will it be in the Lower Hudson Valley?

Temperatures are expected to reach 93 degrees on Monday and 96 degrees on Tuesday, but the heat index could be between 99 and 105 degrees. Heat indices are expected to be most severe near Rockland and northern New Jersey.

An air quality warning has also been issued for the New York metropolitan area, lasting until 11 p.m. Monday. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation said ozone levels could exceed the safe air quality index of over 100.

“Automobile exhaust and out-of-state emission sources are the primary sources of ground-level ozone and the most serious air pollution problems in the Northeast,” the Department of Environmental Conservation said. “Ozone levels generally decrease at night and can be minimized during the day by limiting automobile travel and using public transportation when available.”

The state Department of Environmental Protection said vulnerable people, including children, the elderly and people with respiratory illnesses, should stay indoors and limit physical activity. It also said residents should drive less and use public transportation or carpooling whenever possible, as well as turn off lights when they don’t need them and reduce excessive energy use.

Evening temperatures between 25 and 25 degrees are expected for Monday and Tuesday, with some rain possible until Thursday.

When will the heat and humidity subside? When will there be thunderstorms?

The National Weather Service says there is a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms from after 2 p.m. Monday through Monday night. There is another chance of showers and thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning.

Wednesday is expected to be 33 degrees and mostly sunny, with the possibility of isolated thunderstorms throughout the day, especially after 2 p.m. There is a renewed chance of thunderstorms in the evening, which could last until 8 a.m. Thursday morning. Then the rain looks set to stop and temperatures should cool down a bit for the rest of the week.

The New York metropolitan area has experienced severe summer heat this year, including a heat wave in early June and another in early July.

According to the National Weather Service, the elderly, pregnant women, children and people with chronic or mental health conditions are most at risk for heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

According to Sherlita Amler, Westchester County Health Officer, symptoms of heat exhaustion include dizziness, excessive sweating, clammy skin, muscle cramps and nausea. Other symptoms of heat stroke include red, hot and dry skin and a body temperature of over 102 degrees.

The most important thing to remember during a heat wave, Amler said, is to check parked cars for children and pets and check on older friends, family members and neighbors to make sure they are staying cool and drinking enough water.
