SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) – Thursday marks exactly three years since a father, Gregory Turnage, was killed by a hit-and-run driver in Oakland on Mother’s Day, the victim’s family said. Turnage woke up on Mother’s Day 2021 and prepared breakfast in bed for his son’s mother.

The 41-year-old father was later taking a walk through his neighborhood when tragedy struck. A white Lexus veered onto a sidewalk and crashed into him.

The Lexus driver was Timothy Hamano, a 67-year-old money manager from the Bay Area. Hamano fled the scene of the accident, leaving behind his injured wife and the fatally injured pedestrian, investigators said.

This week, the victim’s family learned that the driver will serve zero days in jail and prison for his sentence.

While the case was being heard in court, Hamano spent the last three years out of prison in prison conditions. He later argued that he had no objection to the crimes of involuntary manslaughter and hit-and-run.

On Wednesday, an Alameda County judge sentenced the asset manager to six years in prison, with three years given credit for time already served at home in Piedmont. Judge Kimberly Colwell allowed Hamano to serve the remainder of his sentence at home, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Turnage’s partner, Angie Brey, gave an emotional victim impact statement at Wednesday’s sentencing hearing. Brey told Hamano he was an “entitled coward who lacked humanity and a moral compass.”

She said: “May 9 marks three years since your selfish decisions and blatant disregard for human life violently ended the life of my partner, Gregory Lou Turnage Jr. You are the type of man who has as little regard for others as you do. “You just spent the day drinking and driving, but you abandoned your own wife and your dying victim at the scene.”

The victim’s 13-year-old son is now forced to navigate the rest of his life without the guidance of his devoted father, Brey said.

Brey’s statement in court continued: “You left a little boy fatherless at a crucial point in his life. And the fact that you have managed to extricate yourself from any real consequences only deepens our grief and deepens our anger.”

Brey KRON4 that Hamano’s wife wrote in her police statement that Hamano spent the day drinking in San Francisco before driving to Oakland and crashing the Lexus.

According to a wrongful death lawsuit filed on May 9, 2021 by the law firm of Callaway & Wolf, “Mr. Hamano celebrated Mother’s Day by drinking alcoholic beverages at two or more locations, including several beers at a San Francisco golf course before drinking Bloody Mary’s and wine at a San Francisco restaurant.”

The result of the case is a failure of justice in the criminal justice system, she said.

Brey told Hamano in court: “Now you can get away with your life, stay home, participate in your family’s life and put this all behind you as a brief inconvenience.” That’s great for you. We walk away with an agonizing hole in our lives, with no justice and no closure.”
