Rwanda government considers suspending British deportation agreement

The Rwandan government has acknowledged Britain’s decision to abandon its controversial plan to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda in a new statement late Monday. This is the first official response from Rwandan authorities to the new Labour government’s intention to cancel the program. During his first press conference, new British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the deportation plan “dead and buried” and criticized it as a “gimmick.” The program, designed to deter migrants from making the dangerous journey to Britain, has faced widespread criticism from human rights groups who call it cruel and inhumane. It has already cost the British government hundreds of millions of dollars, although no deportations have taken place so far. Rwanda reiterated in its statement that it is adhering to the agreement, including financial obligations.
