Bengaluru: A 22-year-old youth who sexually abused a three-year-old girl at his residence in Laggere in northwest Bengaluru in 2021 has been sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment and a fine of Rs 100,000. A fast-track court in the city for cases registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act, 2012, found D. Chetan, then a first-year diploma student, guilty on Monday. Chetan, whose father works at a loom and mother is a housewife, often took the girl to his house and said he liked to play with her, police said. On July 9, Chetan took the girl to his house and sexually abused her. In the evening, the girl complained of pain in her groin area and when asked, narrated the incident to her mother. The mother filed a complaint with Nandini Layout police. The same night, a team led by then Inspector Venkate Gowda arrested Chetan. A day later, he was handed over to the judicial custody of the Central Jail in Bengaluru. Chetan approached the court later that year, stating that he was a student and had exams in September. The court granted him bail in mid-August. After Judge NM Ramesh pronounced the verdict, Chetan was sent to the Central Jail. “The statements of the minor victim and her mother, along with the medical reports confirming the assault, played a crucial role in the conviction,” an official said.
