Police release name of 18-year-old killed in tragic accident on Friday – First update from the state

Delaware State Police are investigating a pedestrian crash that occurred early this morning near Milton that left a woman dead.

Officials said on June 21, 2024, at approximately 12:15 a.m., a Nissan Altima was traveling northbound in the right lane of Coastal Highway north of Oyster Rocks Road. At the same time, a Dodge Charger was stopped on the shoulder of Coastal Highway north of Oyster Rocks Road. The preliminary investigation revealed that a passenger in the Charger got out of the car and was looking for her cellphone. While looking for her cellphone, police say she stepped onto the roadway and into the path of the Nissan. As a result, the pedestrian was struck by the front of the Nissan.

The pedestrian, 18-year-old Shayla Montgomery of Linwood, Pennsylvania, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Nissan, a 34-year-old woman from Dover, Delaware, was not injured.

The road was closed for about four hours while the accident scene was being investigated and cleared.
