The body of a Los Angeles County firefighter who was killed when a burning front-end loader exploded at a Littlerock quarry was carried in a solemn procession from the county coroner’s office to Forest Lawn-Covina Hills Cemetery for funeral services on Wednesday, June 19.

Andrew Pontious, 52, a firefighter with 19 years of experience, died in the explosion around 2 p.m. Friday. He leaves behind his wife, Kim, stepdaughter, Sara, parents, Gary and Ellie, and brother, David, a former county fire captain.

Starting at 11 a.m., firefighters from the Los Angeles County and City of Los Angeles fire departments, those from West Covina and Alhambra, and other public safety agencies joined the train, which arrived just before noon.

The funeral procession, led by a fire engine carrying the flag-covered coffin, moved slowly along country roads and highway lanes, occasionally passing overpasses where rescue workers stood and paid their last respects to their fallen colleague. Firefighting helicopters monitored the proceedings from above.

Governor Gavin Newsom ordered flags at the Capitol to fly at half-mast.

“We will never forget his service to protecting the people of Los Angeles,” the governor said.

Pontious was stationed in Palmdale and was known for his exemplary work ethic, unwavering positive attitude and genuine love of helping people, department officials said. New firefighters could always count on his leadership and mentorship, the department said. When new battalion chiefs arrived, he was the first to give them a tour.

Pontious was a talented cook who often volunteered to help even when he was not on the roster. Pontious, affectionately known as “Uncle,” had a passion for conservation.

A GoFundMe page set up to support Pontious’ family had raised nearly $21,705 as of Wednesday afternoon.
