Tragic ATV accident claims life of local teenager

The Barriere RCMP is investigating a fatal crash involving a side-by-side (SxS) vehicle that left a 15-year-old local youth dead.

The Barriere RCMP is investigating a fatal crash involving a side-by-side (SxS) vehicle that left a 15-year-old local youth dead.

Cpl. Kyle Camalush, RCMP Barriere detachment commander, said: “On June 9 at 4:30 p.m., frontline officers arrived at the scene of the accident near the two-kilometre mark on the Darlington Creek Forest Service Road to find paramedics and bystanders providing medical aid.”

Police learned that a side-by-side driven by a 15-year-old youth who was carrying a passenger lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn. The driver unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. The passenger sustained minor injuries and was transported to the Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops.

Initial evidence collected at the scene suggests the teen was not wearing a seatbelt. The RCMP and BC Coroners Service continue to investigate the incident.

“This tragic event has had a significant impact on all communities surrounding Barriere,” said Camalush. “The Barriere RCMP would like to extend our condolences to the families and friends of those affected during this difficult time.”
