No DNA match, but progress in investigation into Madison Baby Doe’s death

It’s been almost a year since Madison Baby Doe was found dead in the back of a garbage truck in Plain City.

PLAIN CITY, Ohio — Nearly a year after a little girl was found dead in the back of a garbage truck, Plain City police said authorities have not yet identified the girl’s parents.

In June 2023, the little girl was found by garbage collectors in the back of their truck while they were picking up trash in Plain City. Police said the girl’s umbilical cord was still attached. City officials named her “Madison Baby Doe” and held a funeral for her.

Police said Wednesday that the girls’ parents had not yet been identified. Authorities used the Combined DNA Index System to compare the little girl’s DNA profile, but were unable to find any leads. The system links crimes and identifies suspects by comparing DNA from crime scenes with that of convicted people.

Although there are no DNA matches, police say progress has been made in the case but would not release details.

“Revealing further details could jeopardize the investigation and undo the progress that has been made. We recognize the public concern surrounding this matter and remain focused on seeking justice for Madison Baby Doe,” Police Chief Dale McKee and Madison County Attorney Nicholas Adkins said in a joint press release.

The Montgomery County Medical Examiner’s Office was unable to determine the baby’s cause of death. The autopsy report noted multiple fractures and lacerations throughout her body. Madison County Medical Examiner Dr. James Kaerh had previously stated that several of the girl’s injuries and abnormalities listed in the autopsy report could have caused her death, even if they were the only ones present.

Anyone with information about the girl’s death is asked to contact Plain City Police at 614-873-2921.
