British woman ‘raped by man offering massage on Goa beach’

A British woman has reportedly said she was raped on a beach in India while on holiday with her partner.

The woman was allegedly attacked after a man offered her a “mud bath” massage on a beach in Goa.

A man has now been arrested on suspicion of rape.

According to local media, he is said to be part of a group that offers illegal massages near the popular tourist hotspot.

She was with her male partner when the attack occurred on Thursday, June 2.

The woman filed a police complaint on Monday after consulting relatives in the UK and seeking help from the British Embassy in India.

According to Inspector Vikram Naik, a man was arrested within an hour of the report being made to the police.

The suspected attacker had also worked as a school librarian in the past, a senior official said.

“We have contacted the relevant police station to obtain his records. He is not currently working as a librarian,” the officer said.

The accused and the survivor were sent to a nearby hospital for medical examination on Monday.

He is scheduled to appear in a local court next Monday.

An FCDO spokesperson told the media: “We are providing consular assistance to a British national in Goa.”

The Standard has contacted the Foreign & Commonwealth Office for further comment.
