Michigan State Police investigate after 21-year-old man shot by police in Melvindale

MELVINDALE, Mich. – Michigan State Police have been tasked with investigating after a 21-year-old man was shot by police in Melvindale.

The shooting occurred around 12:45 a.m. on Saturday, June 2, in the area of ​​Schaefer Road, west of I-75 in Melvindale. Officers were in the area, a Ford and General Motors warehouse, to investigate a suspicious vehicle.

When Melvindale officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver crashed head-on into one of the patrol cars. According to Michigan State Police, there were six people in the vehicle and one of the people had a gun.

Melvindale officers opened fire and a 21-year-old man was shot. He was taken to a hospital where he is undergoing surgery.

According to police, all suspects attempted to flee the scene and five of the six were arrested. Two of the arrested people were adults and three were under 18 years old, police said.

The vehicle they were in had been reported stolen in Sterling Heights. Michigan State Police said the investigation revealed they had broken into several vehicles in the storage unit.

The investigation is ongoing.
