Bridgeport shooter arrested on Wednesday

According to police, 20-year-old Jayvon Coles of Bridgeport shot and killed a 22-year-old Bridgeport man on May 25.

BRIDGEPORT, Connecticut – A Bridgeport man was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and intimidation of a witness after he allegedly shot another city man in the groin area on May 25, according to the city Police Department.

Jayvon Coles, 20, is accused of shooting a 22-year-old Bridgeport man last Saturday night, according to Bridgeport police.

Police said they were notified around 11:05 p.m. that the victim had been taken to a local hospital with a gunshot wound to the groin area.

According to police, the victim said he was shot while walking near Read Elementary School on Ezra Street.

He was treated in hospital for the past few days before being released, police said.

The department’s Detective Bureau is conducting an ongoing investigation in cooperation with the Bridgeport District Attorney’s Office.

After an investigation, Bridgeport homicide detective Keith Hanson identified Coles as the shooter responsible, police said. On Wednesday morning, Hanson obtained an arrest warrant for Coles, charging him with first-degree assault and intimidation of a witness.

On Wednesday afternoon, the police Regional Task Force, Homicide Unit and the FBI’s Violent Gang Safe Streets Task Force found Coles at the Greene Homes Housing Community and arrested him, police said.

Police added that Coles was taken to the police station and served with the arrest warrant. His bail is set at $1 million, with the requirement that 30% of the bail amount be paid in cash directly to the court.

Coles is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday in Bridgeport Superior Court, police said.
