FIRST WARNING DAY Sunday due to the risk of severe weather and tornadoes

(KFVS) – Due to the threat of severe weather, including tornadoes, we are declaring a First Alert Action Day for Sunday.

Chief Meteorologist Grant Dade says a cold front will approach the Heartland on Sunday.

Late Saturday night, a line of severe storms will form ahead of this front and head toward the Heartland. This line of strong storms will most likely reach our western counties before sunrise Sunday and weaken as they move through the area. Even if they do weaken, damaging winds are likely at times as they move through the area.

After the first storm front has passed through, we will experience sunny weather and very warm weather for most of the day. It will also be quite windy.

In the early evening hours, the cold front approaches the Heartland.

Currently, it looks like there is a significant layer of warm air aloft that is preventing thunderstorms from forming. However, as the cold front approaches, storms are likely to form quickly.

With storms forming along the front, very large hail, damaging winds, and a tornado or two are possible.

These storms are expected to move east of the area after midnight Sunday, making for a pleasant Memorial Day.

Today’s forecast and the outlook for next week

A severe weather risk level 2 out of 5 is forecast for today.

According to Cassie Campbell, more severe storms are expected again this late afternoon and evening. Our main concerns with this second wave of storms will be damaging winds and large hail.

Tomorrow we will experience mostly dry weather as the storm system approaches.

On Memorial Day, things look calmer with sunshine and highs between 25 and 27 degrees.
