According to police, a man was shot by officers after an altercation on the street in Massachusetts

A man was shot by police in Malden, Massachusetts, on Wednesday morning after he allegedly assaulted and robbed a woman before getting into an altercation with officers, according to Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan’s office. The incident occurred around 9:15 a.m. on Eastern Avenue (Route 60), near the intersection with Warren Avenue. Officers encountered a man, later identified as Dominique Matthew Long, 31, of Malden, who was involved in an altercation with a woman. That woman and a witness who called 911 said Long had a knife, according to Ryan’s office. Ryan’s office said the 43-year-old Malden woman was walking on Eastern Avenue when Long threw a cup at her and then struck her in the head with his fist. The woman subsequently tried to record Long, but he grabbed her iPad and pulled out a knife, according to Ryan’s office. Long continued walking on Eastern Avenue and threatened another person with a knife, according to Ryan’s office. When several officers asked Long to drop some items he was carrying, he pulled a kitchen knife from his pants pocket and walked toward the officers, according to Ryan’s office. After police unsuccessfully tried to subdue Long with a Taser, another officer shot him, according to Ryan’s office. “Three officers, two men and a woman, and they were saying ‘drop it, drop it,'” a witness said. “As he got closer, he made a gesture like he was reaching into his pocket. I noticed him trying to reach in, then I heard a woman yelping, a woman screaming, and the next thing I knew I heard the popping sounds.” The witness said he heard three gunshots. “So much blood, they ripped his shirt off, they needed rags or something to stop the bleeding, so someone from the taxi stand brought an American flag over or gave it to the officer,” a witness said. Long was responsive at the scene and taken to a Boston hospital, where he was in stable condition. A police officer was taken to a hospital and released. The woman was treated at the hospital and released. Long was arrested and faces armed robbery, assault, three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon and intimidation of a witness. He will be tried once he is medically innocent, Ryan’s office said. “It’s unfortunate. Malden is a good town with a lot of good people. Malden police are good police,” Councilman Chris Simonelli said. A family member of Long said he was an employee of the nearby taxi company. “He’s a very friendly, non-threatening, goofy kid,” the relative said. “He just got a new job and is trying to better himself.” The incident is being investigated by the Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office, the Massachusetts State Police and the Malden Police Department.

A man was shot by police in Malden, Massachusetts, on Wednesday morning after he allegedly attacked and robbed a woman before an altercation with officers, the office of Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan said.

The incident occurred around 9:15 a.m. on Eastern Avenue, Route 60, near the intersection with Warren Avenue.

Responding officers found a man, later identified as Dominique Matthew Long, 31, of Malden, involved in an altercation with a woman. That woman and a witness who called 911 said Long had a knife, Ryan’s office said.

According to Ryan’s office, the 43-year-old Malden woman was walking on Eastern Avenue when Long threw a cup at her and then struck her in the head with his clenched fist. The woman then tried to take a picture of Long, but he grabbed her iPad and brandished a knife, Ryan’s office said. Long continued driving on Eastern Avenue and threatened another person with a knife, Ryan’s office said.

When several officers asked Long to drop several items he was carrying, he pulled a kitchen knife from his pants pocket and walked toward the officers, Ryan’s office said. After police unsuccessfully tried to subdue Long with a Taser, another officer shot him, Ryan’s office said.

“Three officers, two men and a woman, said ‘Drop it, drop it,'” a witness said. “As he approached, he made a gesture as if he was reaching into his pocket. I noticed him trying to reach in, then I heard a woman yelp, then a woman screamed, and the next thing I heard were the banging noises.”

The witness said he heard three shots.

“A lot of blood, they ripped his shirt off, they needed rags or something to stop the bleeding, so someone brought over an American flag from the taxi stand or gave it to the officer,” a witness said.

Long was at the scene and was taken to a Boston hospital where he was in stable condition.

A police officer was taken to a hospital and released. The woman was treated at a hospital and released.

Long was arrested and faces charges of armed robbery, assault, three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon and intimidation of a witness. He will be arraigned once he is medically cleared, Ryan’s office said.

“That is unfortunate. Malden is a good city with lots of good people. The Malden Police Department is a good police force,” said Councilman Chris Simonelli.

A family member of Long said he was an employee of a nearby taxi company.

“He’s a very friendly, non-threatening, goofy boy,” the relative said. “He just got a new job and is trying to improve himself.”

The incident is currently being investigated by the Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office, the Massachusetts State Police and the Malden Police Department.
