Learning to drive is an important part of life as an adult, but it can sometimes be a burden.

Now, the Boardman Township Police Department has partnered with the Boardman School District to launch the Drive to Succeed scholarship program, aimed at easing the financial burden on teens who want to take driving lessons or get their driver’s license.

“Our goal is to provide our youth with the knowledge and skills they need to safely operate a motor vehicle – thereby reducing the number of accidents and fatalities among them,” said Sergeant Paul Grimes.

Scholarships are offered to Boardman High School students between the ages of 15 and 17 based on financial need.

According to a police press release, approximately 300 youth will be able to receive driving lessons and their driver’s license through this program.

The $148,885 grant, awarded to the police department by the Ohio Traffic Safety Office, will be spread over two years.

Applications are available through the Boardman High School Counseling Department.
