Gang member Siale Angilau was shot dead while attacking a witness

This is the shocking moment a gang member on trial was shot dead as he lunged at a witness to stab him.

Siale Angilau, a member of the Tongan Crips gang, was filmed grabbing a pen or pencil before running towards the witness, another gang member.

Court footage shows the witness slumping to the side before a U.S. marshal shot the 25-year-old Angilau four times.

The clip of the 2014 incident has only now been released following pressure from media outlets such as Salt Lake Tribuneafter U.S. District Judge John Dowdell dismissed a lawsuit filed by Angilau’s family alleging excessive force.

The judge wrote in a statement: “The video completely contradicts plaintiffs’ argument that Angilau ceased to pose a threat in less than a second after he lunged across the witness stand, making a stabbing motion with a pen in his hand “executed.”

In the clip, an officer can be heard shouting at Angilau: “Drop the pen, drop the pen from your hand.”

The witness he attempted to attack was out of sight when his attacker was shot and was not injured in the incident.

Angilau’s family wanted a jury to see the video to see whether the marshal used appropriate force after the FBI determined the shooting was justified.

Her attorney, Robert Sykes, contends the witness was in no danger after he moved out of the way and therefore the shooting was unnecessary.

He told the News: “The last three shots all came after he was shot once from behind on the ground and that’s the problem I have with this case.”

“There was no need to use force.”

However, Judge Dowdell said the marshal – called Jane Doe – stopped the attack.

He said: “Angilau was in custody but he was essentially out of custody’s control for the seconds in which he put his plan to attack the witnesses into action.”

“His attack was stopped by the shots Jane Doe quickly fired in less than a second and a half.”

Angilau was hospitalized with at least one chest wound and later died from his injuries.

He was on trial after being one of 17 people named in a 29-count racketeering indictment in which gang members were accused of conspiracy, assault, robbery and weapons offenses.

Angilau was also charged with assaulting two federal officers and brandishing a firearm.

His family has not yet decided whether they will appeal the judge’s dismissal of their lawsuit.
