Truck crash in Harrisburg causes major power outage on July 20, 2024

Harrisburg, NC (July 20, 2024) – According to local news sources, a cement mixer truck caused significant disruption in Harrisburg, North Carolina on Saturday night. Over 500 residents were without power after the truck damaged a power line near Highway 49. The Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office reported that the incident occurred as the truck driver pulled into the Harrisburg Hometown Pharmacy near Highway 49 and Morehead Road. While the driver was getting ready to grab something to eat, the truck damaged a power line as it exited, causing a major power outage in the area.

Power was restored to most affected homes and businesses by 9 p.m. However, Highway 49 remained closed between Morehead Road and Harris Depot Road and officials did not expect it to reopen before midnight. Gavin Jones, a local resident, commented on the impact: “Honestly, I’ve never experienced anything like this. It’s difficult to drive up and down the road and make my deliveries.”

The accident not only caused power outages, but also major traffic delays. NC-49 was closed in both directions, affecting residents and local businesses. Jones added: “It also clogged up some of the back roads that you normally take to get around these kinds of things.”

In another development, it was revealed that Duke Energy knew about safety issues related to the Harrisburg power poles months before the incident. An email thread from last fall indicated that Joe Crapster, Duke Energy’s manager of government and public relations, had brought those concerns to Melanie Hodgson, the director of Harrisburg’s building department. Despite this, the problems were not immediately addressed.

Keith Herrin, a barber at Azeal Barbershop, one of the businesses affected, expressed his frustration: “It’s annoying because I lost money, but if someone had been hurt, it would be a different situation. Next time they need to react faster and make sure someone takes care of it.”

In a similar incident Tuesday afternoon, a dump truck driver knocked down wires along Pepsi Way off NC 49, less than a mile from Saturday’s accident. The Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office issued a citation to the dump truck driver for leaving the dump truck on top of his truck.

Duke Energy responded to the situation by pointing out its protocol for reporting safety concerns, which includes calling a dedicated hotline. The City of Harrisburg was reminded of the proper channels for reporting such issues.
