20-year-old woman killed on I-65, Anniston woman injured in Cullman County crash

CULLMAN COUNTY – A car crash involving two pedestrians that occurred at approximately 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 20, has claimed the life of an Adelphi, Maryland, woman, according to Senior Trooper Brandon Bailey of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.

“Madelyn R. Guerra, 20, a pedestrian sitting in the roadway, was fatally injured when she was struck by the 2022 Toyota Highlander driven by Julie B. Austel, 40, of Fortville, Indiana. Guerra was pronounced dead at the scene,” Bailey said. “A second pedestrian, Tierra R. Cathcart, 19, of Anniston, was also struck by the Toyota. Cathcart was injured and transported to UAB Hospital in Birmingham for treatment.”

Officials did not give a reason why the couple were on the street.

The accident occurred on Interstate 65 near Alabama 69, about six miles south of Cullman in Cullman County.

Bailey said no further information was available as officers from the ALEA Highway Patrol Division continued their investigation.
