Ohio: Police shoot man with knife near RNC grounds

Top line

A man armed with two knives was shot and killed by Ohio police officers in Milwaukee near the site of the Republican National Convention. The officers were in the city to assist local law enforcement with security at the Republican event. The incident occurred amid heightened security around political events in the wake of the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.

Key data

The incident occurred Tuesday afternoon in a residential neighborhood about a mile from the site of the Republican National Convention.

Five uniformed officers from the Columbus, Ohio, police department shot the man, who was carrying a knife in each hand and “was involved in an altercation with another unarmed person,” Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman told reporters.

The five officers were part of a 13-person bicycle patrol unit and were discussing their daily duties when the incident occurred, Norman added.

The patrol unit is in Milwaukee along with a large contingent of thousands of police officers from other states to assist local authorities with security arrangements for the Republican National Convention.

Other local officials told the Associated Press that the incident did not appear to be related to security at the party convention itself.
