Defensively, Atlanta is fifth in the WNBA in scoring defense. They are fifth in field goal defense and just 10th in three-point defense. On rebounding, the Dream are fifth in total rebounds per game. The lynx in trouble without a leader

The Minnesota Lynx have been the talk of the WNBA early this season, the second-best team after the Connecticut Sun through the first 20 games. That hot start to the season saw the Lynx win the Commissioner’s Cup over the Liberty in New York. The Lynx have now lost four of their last six games and have fallen to 16-8 overall, now second behind the Vegas Aces in the Western Conference. The Lynx dropped their second straight game Sunday to the Indiana Fever at home, 81-74. The Lynx were again without Olympian Napheesa Collier (foot) in the loss. Alanna Smith led the Lynx with 18 points, but the team shot just 38 percent from the field overall.

The Lynx have struggled without star forward Collier in recent games. The team has admitted it is keeping a close eye on her availability, considering her spot on the Olympic team that begins in a week. Minnesota enters the game ranked sixth in the WNBA in points scored. They are fifth in field goal shooting and the league’s top team in 3-point shooting. The Lynx are second in 3-pointers made per game this season in the WNBA. On defense, the Lynx are second in scoring defense. They are first in field goal defense and first in 3-point defense. Minnesota is seventh in rebounds per game in the WNBA and eighth in turnovers per game. The Lynx are fifth in the WNBA in scoring differential at +6.1.

Key injuries: Forward Napheesa Collier and goalkeeper Olivia Epoupa are out.

The Lynx have already announced, based on their injury report, that Collier will also miss Wednesday afternoon’s game. However, even without Collier, the Lynx have more than enough firepower to overcome the struggling Atlanta Dream. The Lynx offense, despite the loss, was more balanced than it has been in a few games against the Fever. Five different players scored in double figures while the ball movement improved significantly. Minnesota should be able to exploit Atlanta on the perimeter in particular in this game. The Lynx lead the WNBA in three-point shooting and are facing an Atlanta team that ranks just 10th in three-point defense. Minnesota is already 2-0 against the Dream this season and, even without Collier, should come away with a comfortable victory.

Take the Lynx.

Offense hasn’t been easy for Minnesota without Collier in the paint. They’ve scored fewer than 80 points in five of their last six games overall. That’s a far cry from the team that was, at one point, in the top five of the WNBA in scoring. Atlanta has played miserably on offense, finishing last in the WNBA in scoring and field goals. Minnesota leads the WNBA in field goal defense, so I don’t expect the Dream to find their offensive stability in this game.

Take the bottom.
