Ithaca Fire Department and Police Help Rescue Distressed Person – Finger Lakes Daily News

Rescue workers in the city of Ithaca are credited with saving the life of a suicidal man hanging from a suspension bridge near Giles Street.

When officers arrived on scene just before 9 a.m. Tuesday morning, they found that there was indeed a person on the other side of the security fence, clinging to the chain link. Officers quickly made a connection with the individual. When the Ithaca Fire Department and other officers arrived, a plan was quickly devised when the individual made a move to execute their plan. The officers and firefighters reached through and around the chain link fence and clung to the individual who was actively trying to get free.

While officers and firefighters restrained the person and prevented him from falling, the Ithaca Fire Department quickly set up rope rescue equipment, was able to cut through the wire mesh, and place a harness on the person in distress.

The person was successfully and safely rescued from the bridge and taken to the hospital by Bangs Ambulance for further examination and medical care.

In a press release from the Ithaca Police Department, the fire department was praised for their great cooperation in saving this person’s life. Police also wanted to thank the community member who called 911 for his compassion and dialogue with them before police and firefighters could arrive at the scene.

If you or a loved one is struggling with mental health, call or text the Suicide Hotline at 988. If someone is in immediate danger, call 911.
