Case of accused Excelsior Springs murderer and rapist Timothy Haslett

KANSAS CITY, Missouri – The case of Timothy Haslett Jr., an accused murderer, rapist and kidnapper from Excelsior Springs, has sparked intense interest in the city and greater Kansas City area.

The Clay County District Attorney’s Office announced additional charges against Haslett on Tuesday.

In light of the new charges, KSHB 41 has compiled a timeline of key developments in the ongoing criminal case against him.

October 7, 2022 – Investigation into kidnapping and sexual assault launched

On October 6, 2022, around 8:00 a.m., police became aware of a woman knocking on doors and calling for help.

The woman told police she was held against her will and sexually assaulted in an apartment building in the 300 block of Old Orchard.

The police launched an investigation into this case.

October 7, 2022 – Timothy Halsett Jr. arrested, charged

On the same day the investigation began, authorities named Timothy Haslett Jr. as a suspect in the case and charged him.

He was charged with first-degree rape, first-degree kidnapping and second-degree assault.

October 11, 2022 – Documents reveal the condition in which the victim was found

On October 11, 2022, documents obtained by KSHB 41’s Jessica McMaster revealed more information about the condition in which paramedics and authorities found Haslett’s alleged victim.

When paramedics first encountered the victim, she was wearing a garbage bag, a metal collar with a padlock, and had duct tape around her neck.

The victim was also handcuffed and left in a small room in Haslett’s basement.

She told investigators that Haslett raped her multiple times and frequently and that she managed to escape while he was taking his children to school.

November 2022 – Haslett addresses the allegations in a letter to the judge

In November 2022, Sarah Plake of KSHB 41 received a letter in which Haslett addressed the allegations against him.

The letter was found in a file that had nothing to do with the rape and kidnapping case.

Haslett’s ex-wife had asked a court for a temporary restraining order against him to temporarily obtain sole custody of their young child.

“While I understand that the allegations are serious, they amount to nothing more than that,” Haslett Jr. said in the eight-page handwritten letter.

January 2023 – Police ask for help in finding witnesses with possible information about the Haslett case

On January 11, 2023, authorities asked for help in locating Jaynie Crosdale, who they believed had information in the ongoing criminal case against Haslett.

Excelsior Springs police declined to comment on the information they believe Crosdale had.

February 14, 2023 – Additional charges against Haslett announced

On February 14, 2023, Clay County Prosecutor Zachary Thompson announced nine new charges against Haslett in an amended indictment.

Thompson announced that Haslett was charged with first-degree rape, four counts of first-degree sodomy, first-degree kidnapping, two counts of second-degree assault and first-degree endangering the welfare of a child.

February 17, 2023 – Haslett pleads not guilty

Three days after the new charges against him were announced, Haslett pleaded not guilty.

At this court hearing, Haslett appeared in a gray striped prison jumpsuit in which he rocked back and forth.

July 31, 2023 – Kayakers find remains of Jaynie Crosdale

On July 31, 2023, the Clay County District Attorney’s Office announced that kayakers had found the remains of Jaynie Crosdale.

The two kayakers had contacted the Missouri State Highway Patrol on June 23, 2023, about a body in the Missouri River in Saline County.

The MSHP Marine Division later recovered the remains and confirmed that they were Crosdale.

August 3, 2023 – Investigators are investigating whether Halsett was involved in the death of Jaynie Crosdale

On August 3, 2023, authorities told KSHB 41’s Sarah Plake that police were investigating whether Haslett was involved in the death of Jaynie Crosdale.

Excelsior Springs Police Chief Greg Dull confirmed that her remains were found in a barrel and that investigators were checking to see if the barrel matched evidence collected on Haslett’s property.

August 8, 2023 – Investigators return to river where Jaynie Crosdales were found

On August 8, 2023, investigators returned to the scene where Jaynie Crosdale’s remains were found to search for further evidence.

Clay County Prosecutor Zachary Thompson joined the Missouri State Highway Patrol at Hills Island Chute to familiarize himself with the scene.

There he also called on the public to look out for more barrels.

April 15, 2024 – Haslett appears in court; lawyers request sealing of case files

On April 15, 2024, Haslett appeared in court, where his attorney told a judge that the evidence did not reach her in time.

His attorney also filed a motion to seal the court records in the Haslett case.

July 9, 2024 – Haslett is charged with murder in connection with Jaynie Crosdale’s death

On July 9, 2024, Clay County Prosecutor Zachary Thompson announced that Haslett is now charged with the murder of Jaynie Crosdale.

During a press conference, Thompson announced that Haslett was charged with first-degree murder in connection with Crosdale’s death.
